Recently renovated, the San Telmo museum is one of the most prestigious in the city and undoubtedly the most beautiful. It is built in a former Dominican convent from the 16th century, which gives the place a special atmosphere. It is without doubt a must-see for anyone travelling to San Sebastian.

We recommend a formidable walk along the slopes of Mount Urgull. It runs from the city’s port alongside the mountain along the coast to the mouth of the Urumea River, next to the Kursaal.
The Paseo Nuevo has often become famous for the images that appear on television and thousands of photographs that circulate on the internet with impressive waves hitting the promenade when the tides form large waves, making the collision of these waves with the promenade a fantastic spectacle, although also somewhat dangerous if the appropriate measures are not taken.
On the Paseo Nuevo there is a well-known sculpture by Jorge Oteiza.

This small mountain located between the Old Part and the Paseo Nuevo of Donostia, facing the Cantabrian Sea, at one end of the Bay of La Concha, surprises us with some of the best views of the entire capital of Gipuzkoa. The Sala Kubo Kutxa functions as an exhibition hall, installed in one of the cubic structures of the Kursaal centre. Inside, you will be able to enjoy the exhibition that is available by consulting here.

At the end of the Zurriola beach, you will find the Sagüés wall and a street full of bars where you can watch the sunset while watching the surfers waiting for the wave, drink a few beers and have a snack while the sun slowly sets. This is a great idea for any sunny day.

Mount Ulía stretches from Zurriola beach at its western end to the port of Pasajes at its eastern end. This is why we recommend a walk of approximately 2.5 hours where you can see the impressive cliffs that end in the sea.

At the end of Zurriola beach is the Oquendo Cultural Centre. You have to take the stairs to Zemoria Street. A steep climb that in ten minutes of effort and without loss leads to the first point of the route: the Mirador de Iradi.

The pintxopote is a closed offer of pintxo and drink offered by some bars that is a little cheaper than on a normal day.

The busiest pintxopote in Donosti is the one in Gros. Every Thursday from 7:30pm to 22:30pm the street and the bars are filled with all kinds of people, although there are two distinct areas.

Zabaleta Street is the most youthful area for pintxopote, where size is generally more important than quality. You can see a multitude of young people between 18 and 30 years old sitting on the ground all along the street looking for the patatas bravas of la Gaviota or the meat ball of Capricho, it is without a doubt a cool place if you think about partying in Donosti.

But on the other hand, the pintxopote in Karkizano street and the surrounding area, in general, are of higher quality. This area is more focused on a more adult public, from the 40s to the 60s, and this is noticeable in the quality of the pintxos and the price.

Formed by a network of pedestrian streets full of restaurants and small shops, the Old Quarter is the busiest area of Donostia. Plaza Gipuzkoa, right in the centre of San Sebastian, is a much-loved spot by the people of San Sebastian. With more than 5,000 square metres, it is the perfect place to take a break from the daily hustle and bustle. One of the most A M A Z I N G green areas in Donostia, with an area of 29,037 square metres, are the gardens of the Miramar Palace. Here you will also find the Miramar Palace building, which is sure to remind you of English country houses. Thanks to its location, you can enjoy a marvellous view of La Concha and Ondarreta beaches. For centuries, members of the Spanish royal family have strolled through these gardens, and now it is your turn. Strolling and exploring the garden and the paths surrounding the palace will have its reward, as there you will find one of the treasures that the garden holds and that you will surely want to get your hands on: a large crown! To access these gardens, you can do so from the Antiguo neighbourhood or from the Paseo de Miraconcha.

The Wind Comb is one of Eduardo Chillida’s best-known sculptures. Located at the end of Ondarreta beach, three large steel sculptures jut out over the rocks of the Bay of Biscay, combing the wind in this place where it usually blows strongly.

Getting there involves a pleasant stroll and the chance to listen to the waves and the wind blowing through the rocks.

Be careful when the accesses to the Peine del Viento and the Paseo Nuevo are closed due to the storm. The beautiful promenade can become a dangerous area where the most reckless can get a scare due to the strong waves caused by the storm.

The nearby Jaizkibel mountain makes for a fun excursion with children. Discovering the ruins of the towers and meeting the pottokas that inhabit this area will make the little ones enjoy being in contact with nature. In Guadalupe we can visit the Hermitage and there is a nice picnic area.

We propose you to discover the origins of Euskadi through its most important caves, both those of natural origin and those dug by man for the exploitation of its minerals. The adventure begins in the Arditurri Mines. Entering these mines is an unusual experience. The engineer Juan Guillermo Thalacker wrote in 1803: “Four hundred men working for two hundred years would not have been enough to drill all these galleries”. This sentence gives an idea of the magnitude and uniqueness of the Arditurri mining area. The walk takes place in a magical atmosphere created by the light and sound effects that have been installed in the tunnels. The mining area is accessible both on foot and by bicycle.

In the middle of Pasaia Bay, a good idea is to cross by boat from Pasai Donibane to the neighboring Pasai San Pedro and visit Albaola, a shipyard of traditional Basque boats. Here, craftsmen work live, in front of the public, in the construction of a replica of the whaler San Juan, a galleon of the sixteenth century. At the Albaola Factory we can dress in the same skins that protected the whalers, and listen to the story of these great maritime odysseys in the New World.

33 kilometers from San Sebastian, in the town of Zestoa, is one of the best Paleolithic treasures in the Basque Country. It may not have the fame of the Altamira Cave, but just over half an hour from Donosti is the Ekain Cave, which houses cave paintings, more than 14,000 years old, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At present, as in Altamira, the original cave cannot be visited for conservation reasons, but a few steps away they have created a reproduction that is very faithful and well worth a visit.

The Ekain cave has 70 animal figures, of which 64 were painted and six were engraved. The horse is the most represented figure, but there are also bears, some deer and some painted fish.

To see the replica of the Ekain cave, there are two types of entrance:

• Ekain Fast: lasts about an hour and only includes the guided tour of the replica and the free visit to the small museum next to it. Price: 6€ for adults and 5€ for students, teachers, pensioners and children from 6 years old. Children under 6 years old are free.
• Ekain Aventura: lasts about two hours and if you go with children is the one I recommend to take, because in addition to the guided tour of the replica and the free visit to the museum, includes a workshop in which you learn how they made fire, hunted and painted in the caves during Prehistory. The Chillida Leku Museum, in Hernani, Guipuzcoa, is a large open-air space. Consisting of gardens and woods that are located next to a farmhouse, it contains much of the work of sculptor Eduardo Chillida.

Every Sunday we offer the possibility of visiting the museum in a playful and fun way with the help of our team of educators. Children accompanied by an adult will be able to touch the sculptures and get inside the spaces designed by Chillida and discover his unlimited universe of forms.

It is considered one of the most typical of Euskadi and occupies three different scenarios: in the enclosure of the Tinglado (or Zerkausia) are sold the most representative local products of the area, the Plaza Verdura hosts a market of flowers and plants, and in the Plaza Euskal Herria are put on sale foreign products and textiles. Since it was founded in 1992, one of the main tasks of the Araeta cider house has been the own and family production of cider, following step by step the traditional method, from the reception of the apple, through the pressing, to the bottling, thanks to 40,000 m2 of own land of apple trees.

Araeta cider maker has been in full operation until December 2013, now, after a short period of reform, it reopened its doors to start a new stage.

More than 20 years ago we started with the Zelai Txiki restaurant in a centenary farmhouse at the foot of Ulía, in San Sebastián. It is the birthplace of illustrious characters such as Blas de Lezo and has a long and relaxing promenade next to which there is a shipyard open to the public: Albaola, where a Basque whaling ship is currently being built by traditional and artisanal means.

• Plaza de Santiago: This square is the true epicenter of the old town and the main place for the locals to socialize. Its colorful houses look like the ideal setting for a canvas. Around the square, we find different bars and restaurants with large terraces, where you can enjoy a cider accompanied by a classic pintxo.
• Casas Puente: The historic center of Pasajes San Juan has a set of cobbled streets that literally cross the houses. And some of them have a curious structure, with small tunnels.
• Casa de Víctor Hugo: The French writer was also attracted by the beauty of Pasajes. So much so that he settled for a season in 1843, in search of inspiration for his novels. This traditional 17th century house is now a museum dedicated to the memory of Victor Hugo, with drawings of the author and some of his stories.

• Playa de Kalaburtza Pasajes can also boast of a small beach. At high tide its space is much reduced, but the positive thing is that being very protected, there are no big waves and you can take a dip even if you go with children. To get to this cove, you must go along the Bonanza Promenade (Bonanza Ibilbidea) that runs along the coast towards the sea.
• Alabortza Kantina This chiringuito has a terrace with incredible views to the bay of Pasajes. Informal and casual atmosphere frequented by the locals and with a very pleasant staff. They serve rations and grilled fish at a very good price. It is to about 100 meters before the beach of Kalaburtza.
• Puntas de Donibane It is the breakwater that separates the estuary from the sea, with a small lighthouse at its end. It can be dangerous to try to cross to the lighthouse, but from a distance the scenery is really beautiful. To get there you must go to the beach of Kalaburtza and about 30 meters ahead there is a narrow path that runs along the mountain, parallel to the sea. Another place with good views is the Atalaya de Donibane.

You cannot visit Pasajes without enjoying its gastronomy, with a seafood aroma and recipes handed down from generation to generation with the best products of the Cantabrian Sea. • Casa Cámara. This restaurant is an institution in Donibane Pasaia, with five generations behind it. It stands out for its excellent fish and seafood menu and beautiful views of the port of Pasaia. Reservations are essential.

The best way to get to Hondarribia, located 20 kilometers east of San Sebastian, is by car, in about half an hour from the capital of Guipuzcoa.

If you don’t have a car you can take a bus from Plaza Gipuzkoa in San Sebastian that will drop you off at number 3 Foru Kalea, 700 meters from the old town.

• Puerta de Santa María: One of the best things to do in Hondarribia is to leave your car in the parking lot located a few meters from the Puerta de Santa Maria, one of the two main entrances to the old walled city, and start your visit in this area. Once you cross this gate presided over by a coat of arms of the medieval town and the statue of “Hatxero” representing one of the soldiers who opened the way to the troops, you will access the Main Street or Nagusi Kalea, which is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful of the town.
• Plaza del Obispo: Before walking through the whole Kale Nagusia, we recommend you to take the first small street you find on your right, to enter the fantastic Plaza del Obispo (Apezpiku). This square is one of the oldest to see in Hondarribia and stands out for being surrounded by beautiful traditional houses with balconies and wooden windows in bright colors and for having a statue of Cristobal de Rojas y Sandoval, archbishop of Seville, chaplain of Charles V and protector of Santa Teresa.
• Kale Nagusia: Once you have seen the Plaza del Obispo you can return to the Kale Nagusia or Calle Mayor, the main artery of the old town and which has some of the most outstanding buildings to visit in Hondarribia. This narrow cobblestone street will take you to the Church of Santa María de la Asunción y del Manzano passing by historic buildings with wooden eaves and wrought iron balconies such as the Baroque style Town Hall, the Zuloaga Palace, the Iriarte House with its wooden framework, the Ladrón de Guevara House of blue vitrified brick and the Casadevante House, where the terms of the truce of the Siege of 1638 were negotiated.

Restaurante Gran Sol

This is probably the best known restaurant in Hondarribia and we dare say, one of the most recommended in the Basque Country. And there is no one who doesn’t talk about it when you visit this town.

With an endless list of pintxos, many of them award winners, this legendary place is, without a doubt, a sure hit.

Although any of their pintxos are recommended, we recommend the exquisite Jaizkibel, Hondarribia, Mika and the Huevo Mollete. As well as pintxos, you can also eat tapas, including octopus and scallops.

The price of the pintxos is between 4.10 and 4.90 euros, bearing in mind that they are very elaborate signature pintxos, and the portions are around 15-19 euros.

• Paseo marítimo: One of the first places worth visiting in this town is its promenade, known as Promenade Jacques Tibaud. • Iglesia de San Juan Bautista: Undoubtedly, in this town it is also necessary to see this temple, which is the most important in the area. A marriage that put an end to a great war between France and Spain. Of this religious building it is worth highlighting, above all, its oak galleries, its surprising 17th-century Baroque altar and its vault, also made of wood. Anyone who has the chance to visit Biarritz will realise, from the very first moment they set foot on its soil, that it is a city full of possibilities, with a wide variety of forms of entertainment and a great leisure agenda.

In this sense, we would have to highlight that one of the main actions to carry out is to visit the most magical monuments and corners that it possesses, among which are the following:

• Hôtel du Palais: As we have already mentioned, it was in 1854 when Eugenia de Montijo decided to build a summer residence in this town, having fallen madly in love with its beaches. The former, through various vicissitudes, has now become this hotel establishment, located by the sea, which is a reference point and a symbol of local prosperity as well as of the luxury that runs through every corner of the town. The five-star accommodation, which has held the ‘Palace Distinction’ since 2011, has a number of interesting features. For example, it is worth noting that it is in the shape of an E as a tribute to the name of the aforementioned empress and that it hosted illustrious guests such as the famous Sissi.
• Puerto de los Pescadores: Bearing in mind the whaling origins of the city, one must be aware of how special it is to see this place, which was built in 1870, in situ. When you walk around it, you can enjoy not only spectacular views but also admire the unique houses of the professional fishermen. In this sense, it should not be overlooked that this area is one of the best for tasting the best fish and seafood thanks to the multitude of restaurants in the area. That beam of light guided them back to this place and so it became a sanctuary that can be reached by crossing the Eiffel Bridge, which Napoleon III ordered to be built and which bears the name of the architect who erected it. Since then you have the opportunity to discover the beauty of the French coast and also to visit the Museum of the Sea, which was inaugurated in 1933 and which shows the richness of the local flora and fauna.
• Faro: No less important in Biarritz is this building dating from 1834, which is 74 metres high and allows you to admire a magical, spectacular and fascinating sunset. To get there, however, it is necessary to climb the almost 250 steps on foot.

Capilla Imperial: La fe y la devoción de Napoleón III y de Eugenia de Montijo fueron los motivos que llevaron a la puesta en pie, junto a la que entonces era su residencia de verano y actual hotel, de este espacio. En él encontraron la privacidad necesaria para realizar sus plegarias. Entre las singularidades que identifican a esta edificación se encuentran que está dedicada a la Virgen de Guadalupe y que es fruto de una mezcolanza de estilos arquitectónicos y artísticos, tales como el bizantino o el morisco.

Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa: Cuando la emperatriz se enamoró de Biarritz propició que la nobleza y realeza europea se animaran a conocer la ciudad. Y no sólo eso, también se encargó de invitar a ilustres figuras de aquel momento como sería el caso de importantes dirigentes y nobles rusos, que acrecentaron el prestigio de la urbe. Por eso, para poder conseguir satisfacer las necesidades de los numerosos aristócratas de Rusia que pasaban sus días en la población, se decidió erigir este templo que es reconocido por la espectacular cúpula de color azul que posee.

• Iglesia Ortodoxa Rusa: When the Empress fell in love with Biarritz, she encouraged European nobility and royalty to visit the city. Not only that, but she also took it upon herself to invite illustrious figures of the time, such as important Russian leaders and nobles, who increased the city’s prestige. Therefore, in order to satisfy the needs of the numerous Russian aristocrats who spent their days in the town, it was decided to erect this temple, which is renowned for its spectacular blue dome.
• Chocolat museum: Tourists with a sweet tooth should not miss this centre that revolves around cocoa, its plantation, its production and its many uses.
• The museum Asiática, with a spectacular collection of oriental art, is another must-see in Biarritz, as is the 12th century Church of Saint Martin, or the Old Port, which was used by the old whalers to cut up their catches. As well as visiting these monuments, popular sites and exhibition centres, it should not be forgotten that there are a multitude of activities to be enjoyed in this town. Other highly recommended activities include attending the Surf Festival, which is held every year; enjoying typical dishes in one of its many restaurants or taking a stroll through the Marché Les Halles market. This market, located in Place Sobradiel, dates back to 1885 and is open every day in the morning, allowing you to discover the best local products.
• The beaches of Biarritz: Today, the main tourist attraction of this town on the French coast is its beaches, which stretch for six kilometres. They are ideal both for surfing and for the iodine that the seaweed brings to the water, which is very beneficial for the body in general and for the skin in particular. For this reason, every year a multitude of visitors come to spend unforgettable days in each of these sandy beaches.
• Grande Plage. If there is an important and special beach in Biarritz, it is undoubtedly this one. In the past, it was known as the ‘crazy people’s coast’ because its ‘medicinal’ waters were frequented by many people with various kinds of problems. Pebbles and golden sand intermingle here, allowing a multitude of people to choose it to enjoy a wonderful day of sun and sea. It is surrounded by a promenade full of restaurants and leisure facilities.
• Plage Miramar. Although it is usually calm, it is true that sometimes there are strong currents in its waters that make it unsuitable for surfing. However, the sea is usually calm, which is why many families visit it for a full-fledged day at the beach. It is located between the Hôtel du Palais and the lighthouse.
• Plage Port Vieux. One of the best beaches, without a doubt, to enjoy a quiet and windless swim is this one. Its main problem is that it is very small, so it is often crowded, especially if we take into account its proximity to the city centre.
• Plage de la Côte des Basques. Lamateurs and professionals from the south always choose this beach to practise this discipline, as it has truly spectacular waves. It should also be noted that it is sheltered by some amazing cliffs.
• Plage Marbella. Water sports lovers, on the other hand, tend to opt for this other enclave.
• Plage Milady. To speak of a fascinating beach that leaves anyone’s mouth open is to refer to this one, of fine golden sand, as it has an incomparable and unforgettable rocky setting. It also has a wonderful ‘chiringuito’ (beach bar) where you can eat and have a drink.

• Casa Juan PedroLocated in the heart of the fishing port, Casa Juan Pedro is one of the best restaurants in Biarritz. The owners of this establishment are twin brothers who have made it extremely cosy, and they succeeded! The interior room is decorated in a very warm style, which will make you feel at home. But if the weather is nice, I recommend you to sit and eat on the terrace, where you can enjoy a cosy atmosphere and good views. You’ll be in luxury! Its menu includes various dishes of local cuisine, all homemade. But its speciality is the grilled fish which, without a doubt, is a must-try. Considering the quality of the food and the great atmosphere, the prices are quite moderate. If you want to eat cheaply in Biarritz, you will have an unbeatable experience here.
• Little TrallallaThis food truck spent three years touring the streets of the Basque Country until it decided to set up shop in Biarritz. As they themselves announce, it is the ideal place to try traditional Italian cuisine and, in particular, Neapolitan pizza. The space is very special and invites you to sit at its long tables to savour the various delicacies on its menu, such as its homemade antipasto, or the unbeatable Sunday brunch. The atmosphere is very relaxed and you can listen to music while tasting some Italian or French wine. If you feel like eating a good pizza in Biarritz without sacrificing quality and warmth, be sure to visit Little Trallalla.
• Saline Ceviche BarSaline Ceviche Bar is located in the city centre. You’ll love eating there if you like fresh fish. It is one of the best restaurants in Biarritz and specialises in ceviche and recipes that fuse Caribbean and Pacific cuisine. Each of its dishes is made with top quality ingredients and presented in an elegant and colourful décor. Its menu offers a variety of options, in case you or a companion is not so fond of raw fish. Saline Ceviche Bar is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 12h and 14h, and from 19h and 22h. Its atmosphere is very pleasant and I assure you that you will have a lovely time tasting exquisite dishes that you can accompany with a delicious cocktail. Be sure to try their tataki!
• La Belloteka La Belloteka is an excellent place to eat in the city centre, very close to the Biarritz market. In addition to the delicious dishes on offer, you’ll love the atmosphere of the place. You will receive a very warm and friendly welcome, and the festive atmosphere will even make you want to dance, and dance you will! Meat is the absolute star of the menu at La Belloteka, where you can enjoy different grilled cuts. If you’re not a big fan of meat, there are also dishes for vegetarian diners. They also offer a special menu for children. Don’t hesitate to stop by if you are looking for a cosy place to eat in Biarritz with quality dishes and good service. It is open 7 days a week from 19h to 23.30h.
• Le CAB If you’re looking for a cheap place to eat in Biarritz, I recommend Le CAB, where they serve delicious burgers. Its decoration is modern and industrial style, and is characterised by its wooden furniture combined with iron. It offers a wide variety of burgers that you can accompany with delicious fries. Everything here is homemade, including the bread. The place is a bit small, but don’t worry. You can also order takeaway in case there is no room when you go, but don’t miss the opportunity to try the wonderful burgers on the menu! If you like fast food, take my advice, and don’t miss Le CAB.
• Manatee Biarritz If you’re looking for an environmentally responsible place to eat in Biarritz, look no further than Manatee, a cosy restaurant and coffee shop. The place has a gourmet and creative gastronomic kitchen that prepares delicious dishes using fresh, local, organic produce. You can come and try them from Tuesday to Saturday, at lunchtime or in the evening. If you prefer, you can opt for the Sunday brunch, a very complete option that includes an excellent combination of sweet and savoury food. In the on-site café you’ll have access to great specialty coffee as well as a variety of teas and organic beverages – be sure to try their homemade breakfasts! Whatever time you go to Manatee, you’ll find simple, delicious and very healthy food.

• Maison Dezamy Do you like sweets and ice cream? If so, I recommend a visit to Maison Dezamy for the best ice cream in Biarritz. This charming place is run by Sara and Guillaume. She is a true Italian ice-cream lover and he is an engineer with the best entrepreneurial energy. They work side by side to create the most delicious flavours. You will also find here sweets to go with your ice creams and sorbets – everything is spectacular! In addition, their products include only 8% fat and are made with slow pasteurised milk to preserve all their nutrients. The menu also includes products suitable for allergy sufferers. Maison Dezamy has a nice terrace where you can sit, but you can also choose to buy take-away. You shouldn’t miss the opportunity to try these exquisite Italian ice creams, and let me know what you think!
• Chez Scott Be in no doubt that Chez Scott is one of the best restaurants in Biarritz, but also one of the most expensive. The establishment offers traditional French food but also food from a number of other European countries. The dishes are creative and very healthy, due to the use of organic products. The menu is very varied and includes options for all tastes and with the necessary quality to satisfy the most demanding customers. The decoration of the place is very original and cosy. In addition, the service is efficient and friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Open only from Thursday to Saturday between 10:00h and 23:30h. Don’t miss it if your stay in Biarritz coincides with these days of the week.
• A la bonne Franquette If you like completely homemade regional cuisine, you’ll love this place. It is true that it is small in size, but don’t be fooled by appearances. The quality of its food is first class, as is the attention you receive when you eat there. So that everyone can witness the cooking process, the kitchen is open and can be seen from the dining room – you’ll see the chef in action! The dishes of the day are exquisite and are renewed every day. The same goes for their homemade desserts, including tiramisu, chocolate mousse and apple tart. You can eat in the lounge, on the outdoor terrace or, if you prefer, buy to take away. Whatever you choose, be sure to try what A la bonne Franquette has to offer for those looking for a cheap place to eat in Biarritz.
• Mercado Les Halles One of the places we always go when we visit Biarritz is Les Halles Market. Apart from being one of the must-see places to visit in Biarritz, you can eat delicious local food and our must-visit spot every time we visit the market is the building where the seafood restaurant is located. Here you can order delicious oysters, which are prepared on the spot, ready to eat – they’re delicious! Once you’ve had your plate of oysters, go upstairs where you’ll find tables and chairs. In the large pavilion there are stalls with many kinds of local products: bread, sausages, cheeses, fruit, vegetables, etc. Another great way to eat cheaply in Biarritz is to buy some of these foods and eat them in a quiet corner of the city. If it’s with a sea view, all the better!

• Ver la Catedral de Bayona: As you approach Bayonne, either from the north or the south, the two tall towers of its magnificent Gothic cathedral start to come into view on the horizon. The Cathedral of Santa Maria, hidden among the narrow streets of the historic centre, is the emblem and the main building that you can visit in Bayonne in one day. Its construction began in the early 13th century, but it was not until the 17th century that it was completed. The cathedral has been declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco as a monument on the Pilgrim’s Way to Santiago de Compostela in France. Next to it is the splendid 13th century cloister, one of the largest in France. Access to the Cathedral and the cloister is completely free.Leon Bonnat Gardens: The Leon Bonnat Gardens are located on the banks of the Adour river, just a few steps from the Town Hall. They are named after the French painter Leon Bonnat, and are one of the main green spaces to see in Bayonne in one day. It is a pleasant garden, with fountains and paths, located next to the river. In front of the gardens you can see the Bayonne Tourist Office and a small car park. This car park is the one we use every time we decide to visit Bayonne, mainly because of its proximity to the historic centre.
• Rue du Port Neuf: This pedestrian street, which used to be a canal for transporting goods, is one of the most popular in the city. Today it offers one of the most beautiful sights to see in Bayonne, with the two towers of Saint Mary’s Cathedral looming at the end of this narrow street. But Rue Port Neuf is famous for something else. Here you will find the best chocolate shops in Bayonne. A real treat for the senses. You can also enjoy small shops where you can taste typical local products such as ham and cheese, and several cafés, shops and restaurants. An essential place to visit in Bayonne.
• Visitar el Mercado de Bayona: This covered market, called ‘Les Halles’, is located on the banks of the river Nive. It is located in one of the liveliest areas to be seen in Bayonne, with a multitude of bars and restaurants on both banks of the river. It is open every day of the week, but is especially lively and busy on Saturday mornings, when the weekly open-air market is held nearby. Inside Les Halles market you’ll find stalls selling all kinds of local produce, especially fruit, cheese, fish, bread and meat, as well as the occasional bar where you can sample them.

• Ver el Museo Vasco de Bayona: This museum tells the story, from its origins, of Basque culture and tradition in France. It focuses mainly on the city of Bayonne, where it explains the history of the city and its importance as a seaport. The Basque Museum of Bayonne is also the main ethnographic collection in the south of France. It was founded in 1924 in a 17th century building called Maison Dagourette. It is the main museum to see in Bayonne in one day.
• Las orillas del río Nive: It is one of the most charming places to see in Bayonne. The river Nive separates the two main neighbourhoods of the city, Petit Bayonne and Grand Bayonne, with picturesque and colourful houses on both sides of the river. In this area of the city, next to the river, are also two of the main places to visit in Bayonne: the market ‘Les Halles’ and the Basque Museum. The neighbourhoods are linked by several bridges, which offer beautiful views of the river and the surrounding area. Strolling along both banks, as well as enjoying one of the many bars and restaurants in the area, is one of the essential things to do in Bayonne in one day.
• Saint Esprit: The third quarter to see in Bayonne: This is the third quarter of the city, located on the other side of the Adour river. In this area you can also see the Bayonne train station and the Chocolate Museum. The Saint Esprit quarter was of some importance in past centuries, as it served as a refuge for hundreds of Sephardic Jews escaping the Inquisition in Spain. They contributed to the development of the city by introducing chocolate to the city, later spreading this tradition to the rest of France. The citadel, a 17th-century military construction, is also located in the Saint Esprit district. Unfortunately, it is not open to visitors.
• Rue d’ Espagne: Rue d’Espagne is the oldest street you can visit in Bayonne. It connects St Mary’s Cathedral with the Porte d’Espagne, one of the old entrances to the city. This gate was the entrance to Bayonne from the south, in other words, in the direction of Spain. Next to the Puerta de España you can see the remains of the old city walls of Bayonne. I recommend that you take a stroll along Rue d’Espagne, as it is one of the most atmospheric streets, bars and shops to see in Bayonne.

• Restaurante Bistro Toque Bistro Toque is one of the most highly rated restaurants in Bayonne. The space is small but the food, the ambience and the staff make it well worth a visit. It offers good local food at a reasonable price. It is also close to the tourist office so you can take the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the city.
• Restaurante Xafla Bayonne is full of restaurants of very high gastronomic quality with an impeccable atmosphere and decoration. • Le Bistrot Itsaski Bistro Itsaski is very close to the Basque Museum (Musee Basque). French cuisine is part of the menu of this restaurant. Bistro Itsaski’s recipe for success lies in its homemade prawns, tasty risotto and perfectly prepared tuna. There is nothing better than ordering an amazing parfait, a delicate mango dessert or a unique chocolate moelleux tart. This place offers you its delicious wine, its superb white wine and its extraordinary sangria. Slowly sip the unbeatable coffee served here with only your enjoyment in mind. • Kitoko, African Food It is a restaurant with Senegalese food that transports you to Africa with a very good taste.
• Le Camembar If the rain has caught you on your way to Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne, take shelter in this restaurant. Here you can sample authentic French cuisine. Tasting their generous camembert cheese, their tender pan roti or their unique salads is definitely a great idea. Try the delicate parfait, the homemade fruit cake or the surprising tiramisu offered by Le Camembar. Here you can have an excellent wine or an irresistible white wine. It is easy to find this place thanks to its great location. Many visitors report that the staff is friendly. Resting and eating here is always a pleasure, mainly because of its great service. At this place, its diners enjoy a festive atmosphere and comfortable décor. This restaurant has achieved a 4.7 according to Google’s rating scale.

Tipical products

The two main typical products of Bayonne are chocolate and ham. You will find chocolate shops in every street, but the most famous one is Cazenave, located on Rue du Port Neuf. This is the oldest chocolate shop in Bayonne (since 1854). Here you can taste its popular sparkling chocolate. Bayonne has been linked to chocolate since the Middle Ages, as it was here that it was introduced by the Jews expelled from Spain, later exporting the tradition to the rest of France and Europe.

The other traditional product is ham. Bayonne ham can be tasted in practically every bar and restaurant in the city. It is so important for the local economy that the Bayonne Ham Fair is held every year. Other typical products are peppers, cheeses and, as a seafaring town, fish.

• Palacio de Narros: One of the best things to do in Zarautz, if you arrive by car, is to leave it in the underground car park next to the Narros Palace and start your visit here. This 16th-century building, located at one end of the beach, was the summer residence of Queen Isabella II of Spain, making it one of the favourite holiday destinations of the aristocrats and upper classes of the time. In this private palace you can see on the façade a family coat of arms with the inscription ‘Zarauz antes que Zarau’ (Zarauz before Zarau), as well as an English-style garden.
• La Playa: After seeing Palacio de Narros from the outside, you can take a refreshing dip or stroll along the 2.8 kilometre long beach, known as ‘The Queen of Beaches’ and another of the most beautiful places to visit in Zarautz. This beach of fine sand and strong waves, located among the best beaches in the Basque Country, is perfect for surfers and water sports enthusiasts. In addition, the final stretch is home to the Iñurritza Protected Biotype, a protected area made up of dunes, marshes and an estuary where different species of flora and fauna coexist, which you can observe from a wooden platform. If you want to enjoy the best views of this area, the beach and the island of Mollarri, we recommend you go up to the viewpoint located in an old watchtower on Mount Talaimendi.
• Paseo Marítimo: After seeing the Iñurritza area, we recommend you make your way back to the centre along the fantastic seafront promenade, another of the places to visit in Zarautz. The first stop is the beautiful terrace overlooking the sea at Karlos Arquinaño’s restaurant, where we recommend you try some of his delicious pintxos. This restaurant also has a food service, although due to the high prices, we recommend Kirkilla Jatetxea or Telesforo, both located in the old town and considered to be two of the most recommended restaurants in Zarautz. Once you have regained your energy, you can continue your stroll to see the different atmospheres of the beach and the original sculptures made of bronze and stainless steel, characteristic of this area of the town.

• Old Town: Once you get back to the Narros Palace, you can start your visit to the Old Town at the Church of Santa María la Real, built in the 15th century in Gothic style and another of the most essential places to see in Zarautz. After seeing the baroque altarpiece inside and climbing the bell tower that houses the interesting Museum of Art and History, you can go to the beautiful Market Square presided over by the Town Hall, which occupies the building known as Casa Portu, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument for its architecture. To leave this square you can take Nagusia Street, where you will find historic buildings such as the 15th century Luzea Tower, the Makatza House and the Zarauz Market, until you reach the beautiful Plaza de la Música.
• Walk from Zarauz to Getaria: Another of the best things to do in Zarautz, if you have time, is to walk along the 4.5-kilometre pedestrian promenade along the coast of Gipuzkoa, where you can observe the geological phenomenon known as flysch, until you reach Getaria. You can start the route by going up to the chapel of Santa Bárbara, from where you will have spectacular views of Zarautz, and then continue along the vertical cliffs of the Basque coast until you reach the upper part of Getaria, another of the most beautiful fishing villages in the Basque Country. In addition to completing this list of places to see in Getaria, which will take you about 2 or 3 hours, we recommend you try a delicious grilled turbot and baked txangurro, accompanied by Getaria txakoli, at Asador Astillero or Politena, considered to be some of the most recommended restaurants to eat in Getaria.

• Kirkilla Jatetxea Known for being one of the most recommended restaurants in Zarautz, this place is a sure hit, whether you choose it for lunch or dinner. Although they have an à la carte menu, we recommend you opt for the menu of the day for 18 euros (weekends 24 euros) which includes 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 desserts to choose from, including many traditional recipes. • Berazadi Berri Located on the outskirts of the town in a rural house with unique views of the Basque coast, Berazadi Berri is one of the best-known and most highly recommended restaurants in Zarautz. • Asador Izeta Also located on the outskirts of the town, this is another of the most recommended restaurants in Zarautz if you want to enjoy the local and traditional gastronomy. Although they have many dishes on the menu, this place is famous for its txuletón, which we recommend you not to miss and that you can share between several people, with some starters. • Euskalduna Taberna Euskalduna Taberna is located right in the centre of town and is not only one of the best-known places in town, but also one of the cheapest restaurants in Zarautz. Although they have an à la carte menu and a bar serving pinchos or pintxos, we recommend you opt for the daily set menu for 12 euros, which includes dishes of traditional cuisine, without great pretensions, but in which good produce, good cooking and quantity are the main features. • Karlos Arguiñano We cannot finish this list of the most recommended restaurants in Zaratutz without mentioning the Karlos Arguiñano restaurant, which is undoubtedly one of the best-known places in the town. Although they have a dining room, we recommend you to stay in the terrace area or inside, in the bar area, to enjoy some pintxos, each one better than the next, or go for breakfast and try the famous croissants, which are said to be the best in the area. The price of the pintxos is around 2-3 euros, depending on the main product. Address: Calle Mendilauta, 13

• Old Town: The historic quarter of Getaria is located on a rocky cape opposite the island of San Antón, which has been artificially linked to the coast since the 15th century. Between the two, sheltered by San Antón, lies the port of Getaria, which was the town’s main source of wealth for centuries and which still maintains an important fishing industry. The parallel streets of the town centre, with their medieval layout, slope down towards the sea. Still partly enclosed by the remains of its modern walls, the historic centre of Getaria is home to its main monuments, including the church of San Salvador, the towers of Zarautz, Ochoa Ibáñez de Olano, as well as the remains of many other Gothic and Baroque palaces and houses, and several archaeological sites of great historical value. The lively streets of the old town are also one of the centres of Getaria’s social life and renowned maritime gastronomy. The grills, located outside, are a fundamental architectural element of several buildings-restaurants, as well as of the cultural landscape of the town.
• Iglesia San Salvador:Considered one of the great Gothic jewels of the Basque Country, since 1895 it holds the title of National Monument. (Salbatore Parroki Eliza): Gothic church that is declared a National Monument. It dates back to at least the 14th century, although most of it was built between the 16th and 18th century and had to undergo numerous repairs during the 19th century because of the damage it suffered during the Carlist Wars. The first General Assemblies of Guipuzcoa were held here in 1397. The temple consists of three naves, divided into three sections each. Around 1560 it received the choir stalls carved by Andrés de Araoz in his workshop in Aya. • San Antón Mountain:The charm of Getaria lies in its views, its coastline, its nature, the idyllic atmosphere of the Bay of Biscay and the tradition that surrounds it. Getaria is like an eternal viewpoint overlooking the ocean, one of those villages on the Basque coast that is not difficult to fall in love with. Much has been discussed about the origins of the word Getaria. Some consider it a derivation of the Latin word “cetaria”, which means fish hatchery. However, it is more likely, as in the nearby town of the same name on the Basque-French coast, that it comes from the word “cataria”, which refers to the place from which the sea can be seen. Getaria is certainly a watchtower over the sea and throughout the municipality we find places where you have a privileged view over the entire Basque coast. Within the old town we must highlight viewpoints such as the monument of Elcano, the viewpoint of Bistaona located at its foot, or the Katrapona square on the sea front of the walls. In addition, unbeatable views can be enjoyed on Mount San Antón, in the rural village of Askizu and on the top of Garate.

• Elkano monument:Juan Sebastián Elkano, born in Getaria in 1487, would go down in posterity as the first navigator to sail around the world. Embarked in 1519 in the expedition commanded by Magellan, he would end up taking command upon the death of the Portuguese, successfully completing the voyage on September 6, 1522, upon arriving at Sanlúcar de Barrameda. In 1922, on the occasion of the 4th centenary of the voyage, the construction of a monument dedicated to his figure was undertaken. The sculptural project, the work of the Palencia-born Victorio Macho, in the Art Deco style then in vogue, rises on an old 17th century bastion of the Getaria wall, which serves as a plinth. The monument is crowned by a winged victory, in the image of the masks that adorned the prow of the ships. In the lower part a relief represents Juan Sebastián Elkano; in the interior of the building, an inscription recalls the names of the rest of the crew members who, together with Elcano, managed to complete the voyage.
• Balenciaga museum: The Balenciaga Museum (Cristobal Balenciaga museoa) was inaugurated on June 7, 2011. Getaria was chosen because this is where the famous couturier was born, making it the first museum in the world to be dedicated solely and exclusively to a fashion designer. The museum was built in a building next to the Aldamar Palace, the former residence of Queen Fabiola’s grandparents (Marquises of Casa Torre), Balenciaga’s mentors in his early days. The building consists of 4 floors divided into 3 large spaces and 6 rooms. For communications with Donostia-San Sebastián there is a train that connects Zumaia with Donostia-San Sebastián and takes approximately 40 minutes.

There is also a bus line that regularly connects Zumaia with Donostia-San Sebastian by highway, so communications with the capital of Gipuzkoa are good.

• Ermita de San Telmo: We can not deny that one of the biggest attractions of our visit to Zumaia, was to see the iconic Hermitage of San Telmo, from the sixteenth century and dedicated to the patron saint of sailors. Apart from the spectacular composition it forms with the landscape, which we were also lucky enough to see at sunset, it is one of the most famous filming locations of the hit movie 8 Basque Surnames. Specifically, in this place is where the non-wedding of the two protagonists of the film, Dani Rovira and Clara Lago, is celebrated almost at the end of the film. By the way, if you are fans of this mini saga, a few months ago we told you about Monells, the Catalan village where 8 Apellidos Catalanes was filmed.
• Recorrido por el Flysch de Zumaia: Zumaia offers some of the most spectacular postcards of the Basque Country. Not far from the chapel, in fact a few meters from it there is already a viewpoint, we can take a path that seems to be combing one of the spectacular flysch of Zumaia. Despite the majesty of the landscape is a relatively easy and short path, about 15 minutes. In our case, Dani only did a short section because, as we were with Eric, it was late and there was a strong wind, we preferred to take shelter. The Flysch route belongs to the Basque Coast Geopark and is protected by UNESCO.
• Casco antiguo de Zumaia: Most of the towns we visited on our last route through the Basque Country, has a quite interesting old town and Zumaia is no exception, in fact it is one of the most complete that we can visit. Its most striking building is the parish of San Pedro Apostle of Zumaia, a Gothic church of the thirteenth century, which at first glance looks more like a fortress than a church. It is located in the northeast end of the old town.
• Parroquia de San Pedro Apóstol Another interesting building to see in Zumaia is the Ubillos Palace. It is an old tower, of defensive character, to which was added in the sixteenth century what is its main body. Today it is the current headquarters of the School of Music of Zumaia.
• Palacio Ubillos Other buildings and places of interest are the Olazabal Palace, the San Juan Fountain and the Foronda Palace, today a cultural center, library and municipal archive.
• Palacio de Foronda Particularly we did not have much time to discover this part of Zumaia. Traveling with a baby of a few months, we can not stretch the days as much as we did before. Nevertheless, we were left with the feeling of being in a lively, visual and lively town.
• El Río Urola, el Puerto de Zumaia y el Puerto deportivo: Apart from strolling through the old town, one of the attractions of Zumaia is to approach the promenade along the Urola River that leads to the ports of the town. • Playa de Santiago: Located at the mouth of the Ria Urola, it owes its name to the fact that it is located in what was once part of the coastal path of the Camino de Santiago. Quiet beach, very frequented by the people of Zumaia and that offers a great biodiversity, especially in flora.
• Playa de Itzurun, Game of Throne´s beach:  At the foot of the Hermitage of San Telmo we find Itzurun Beach. It is a spectacular beach, one of the most beautiful we have seen and also has the distinctive Blue Flag. The mixture of its fine dark sand with the water is said to have a high concentration of iodine, which can have beneficial properties for our body.
• Playa Algorri o Aitzgorri Beautiful corner with little sand and full of rocks that invades the sea every time the tide rises, which we find between the flysch. Next to this beach we find the Algorri Interpretation Center, where we can see a good amount of ancient fossils.
• Geoparkea: We cannot finish with the essential things to see in Zumaia without talking about the Geoparkea, which is the geopark of the coast of Gipuzkoa and includes the towns of Mutriku, Deba and Zumaia. There is a route, quite demanding that goes from Deba to Zumaia. It is spectacular, but it can only be done when the tide is low and clears part of the way. Another option, easier if possible, is to do part of the Camino de Santiago del Norte, the Jacobean route that goes to Santiago following the Cantabrian coast, which we have already introduced.
• Boat trip along the coast of Zumaia: If we do not want to walk, or simply want to have the best possible view of the natural spectacle of the geopark and flysch, we have the option of taking a boat tour that takes us through this part of the Basque coast. Here we have the option of doing this trip only through Zumaia (1 hour and 17€) or a more complete one that takes us through Zumaia, Motrico and Deva (3 hours and 25€).

Idoia Ardotegia

Located in the center of town and known by travelers and locals, Idoia Ardotegia is one of the most recommended restaurants in Zumaia. With a cuisine that highlights the dishes prepared with love, quality product and mixture of cuisines, we recommend you enjoy their pintxos, among which are the spider crab, sea urchin and txistorra in addition to the tapas of chili peppers in batter, octopus and cheesecake for dessert. • Old Town: The old part of Orio, Goiko Kale, dates back to the 13th century. It starts at the Church of San Nicolás and climbs up to the vicinity of the hermitage of San Martín de Tours. The streets of the old town climb steeply, almost labyrinthine, clinging to the rock. Coats of arms, well carved sandstone, brightly colored balconies, cobblestone streets… give it a medieval flavor. The historic center of Orio is part of an urban ensemble of great value for preserving almost intact the medieval layout of the hull, as well as a large number of houses from different eras.
• The beaches: Orio is a privileged place. It is located in a beautiful place, where the sea, the river and the mountains meet; and it is green and blue at the same time, one hundred percent natural. To begin with, and with regard to the orography, it is worth mentioning that the coastal monocline Igeldo-Mendizorrotz-Kukuarri, a mountain range that defines the relief of the coast from San Sebastian to Orio, reaches a height of 364 meters in Kukuarri, and descends abruptly towards the sea, giving rise to a wild and practically uninhabited coast, where the cliffs are the protagonists. At the same time, it should be noted that the coastal chain is interrupted here by the wide bed of the Oria estuary, which draws a tortuous course before its exit to the sea, a privileged location where Orio is located. On the other hand, the opposite bank of the estuary is defined by a series of slopes that descend from Pagoeta mountain, and which, alternated by small valleys, culminate in the estuary in front of Orio. This environment is ideal for hiking, and therefore a series of hiking routes, which are signposted, are proposed below.
